The power of the Christian Church as a ... political institution has declined ... to near irrelevance ... in most of the developed world.
Contrast to a time when the church ... was the dominant power.
The church can no longer make ... law. Even if it makes law, it has no ... police ... to enforce its law.
Submission to the church is ... voluntary. Submission to the state is ... mandatory.
If you break the State's laws ... the State can punish you ... even put you to ...death.
If you break church law the most the church can ... do is ... kick you out of the church. If they kick you out, you no longer ... contribute any money to them. LOL!
Without the power of ... violence ... to enforce its way, the church sinks into ... irrelevance.

Sun, February 1, 2009 - 10:08 PMinteresting post...but the bit on excommunication is deeper than just getting kicked out of the church. to the catholics, excommunication is a sentence to hell, or at the very least limbo. an excommunicated catholic is denied heaven itself....scary shit to those ones indoctrinated to believe it. -

Re: go to church or .. nothing will happen if you ... don't
Sun, February 1, 2009 - 11:25 PMI dont feel that the Church is really the same oppressive power that it was back in the days of Bakkunin and Marx. Even then, the Church was already on its way out as the dominant political power post enlightenment era, but today the only people who are controlled are those who voluntarily go along with it. I suppose there is a psychological element, but the cure for that is philosophical reason. Out of the big 3 of Capital, Church and State, I think that in much of the world the only significant oppression that remains is from Capital and State. This may be less true in certain parts of the world than it is in the west.
I also dont feel that all religious traditions are equally harmful and oppressive. Quakers, Liberation Theology, Sufi, Zen, Taoism and many indigenous and pagan traditions all have stong libertarian and egalitarian themes to them. Even if they are not based on scientific reason they are not oppressive like the Catholic or Mormon Churches are as armed political organizations.
